What is zero-click search?
Also known as: no-click search, zero-click result
Zero-click search: A zero-click search is a search where the person gets what they need on the results page or in an AI answer and doesn't click through to any website. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews and assistant answers all contribute to it.
Why does it matter?
It changes what success looks like. A page can inform a decision, and even be credited as a source, without registering a visit, so clicks alone understate your influence for some queries.
It also shifts where to invest. Simple factual questions are more likely to end without a click, while comparisons, local choices, pricing and complex tasks more often still lead to a visit.
How do you act on it?
- In Search Console, look for queries with steady or rising impressions but falling click-through rate, and review what now appears above your listing.
- Make sure your brand name appears alongside the facts you want to be known for, so being summarised still builds recognition.
- Prioritise content that answers the question fully and then gives a clear reason to visit, such as a calculator, quote, booking or detailed comparison.
Where FindContentGaps helps
FindContentGaps analyses your own Search Console data, so pages with impressions but weak clicks show up as opportunities, and its content decay detection flags pages whose performance is slipping so you can review whether a SERP or answer change is behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Is zero-click search bad for SEO?
It's a change more than a loss. Some informational clicks go away, but visibility, brand recognition and citations still have value, and many commercial queries continue to produce visits. Measure impressions, citations and conversions, not just clicks.
How do I measure zero-click impact?
There's no direct metric. Search Console impressions versus clicks per query and page is the closest first-party signal, combined with periodic checks of what the results page and AI answers show.
