Answer engine optimisation: how to get your business cited in AI answers

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means making your content easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and cite. In practice: let their crawlers in, find the questions your buyers ask, answer each one directly and specifically, and track whether AI answers cite you or a competitor.

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation is the work of shaping and publishing content so that AI systems which answer questions directly (rather than returning a list of links) use your pages as sources and name your business in their answers.

The "answer engines" are tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. When someone asks one of them "what's the best way to…" or "which company should I use for…", the engine often searches the web, reads a handful of pages, writes a summary and links to some of the pages it used. AEO is about being one of those pages.

You'll also see it called generative engine optimisation (GEO), LLM optimisation or AI search optimisation, and in US spelling, answer engine optimization. The labels overlap. Some people reserve AEO for featured snippets and voice assistants and use GEO for generative AI, but the practical work is the same: be reachable, be the clearest answer, and be trustworthy enough to cite.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO tries to rank a page and earn a click; AEO tries to make a passage on that page the answer an AI engine quotes and links to. The audience is the same person, but they're asking in full sentences and often reading the answer without visiting a results page.

Why SEO still underpins AEO

It's tempting to treat AEO as a replacement for SEO. It isn't. Most answer engines that cite sources get those sources from a search index: Google AI Overviews draw on pages in Google's index, Microsoft Copilot is grounded in Bing results, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run web searches of their own. If your page isn't indexed, loads badly for crawlers or isn't relevant to the query, the best-written answer in the world won't be found.

So the order matters. SEO gets you into the pool of candidate sources. AEO improves your odds of being picked from that pool. That's why FindContentGaps starts with your Google Search Console data: the queries you already get impressions for tell you where you're already a candidate.

Why do AI answers skip some businesses?

Usually because the engine can't reach the page, can't find a clear answer on it, or finds a clearer answer elsewhere. These are the most common, fixable reasons:

  • Crawlers are blocked. A blanket "block AI bots" rule in robots.txt, or a firewall that challenges unfamiliar user agents, can remove a site from an engine's search results entirely.
  • The question has no page. The business answers it on sales calls every week but has never written it down. This is a content gap, and it's the most common problem of all.
  • The answer is buried. The page does cover the topic, but only after three paragraphs of introduction, or spread across a long page with vague headings like "Our approach".
  • It's too vague to quote. "Affordable, fast, trusted" gives an engine nothing to cite. A starting price, a turnaround time and a service area do.
  • Key facts live only in images or PDFs. Pricing tables as images and brochures as downloads are harder for engines to use than plain text on the page.
  • Your own pages compete with each other. Several thin pages on the same topic (keyword cannibalisation) can mean none of them is the obvious best answer.
  • Nobody else mentions you. Answers often draw on third-party sources such as directories, reviews and roundups. If you're absent there, competitors who are present get named instead.

What content do AI engines cite?

Pages that answer a specific question directly, with concrete detail, in a structure that makes each section understandable on its own. Engines differ, and none publishes a formula, but the patterns below are consistent with how they describe their products:

  • A direct answer near the top. One or two sentences that fully answer the question before any background.
  • Question-style or descriptive headings. "How much does a skip bin cost in Cape Town?" is easier to match to a prompt than "Pricing".
  • Specific, checkable facts. Prices, steps, timeframes, requirements, locations and named options.
  • Comparisons with honest criteria. Pages that explain who each option suits, including when you're not the right choice.
  • FAQ sections that cover follow-ups. Answer engines are conversational, so the next question matters as much as the first.
  • Signs of real experience. Named authors, first-hand examples, original photos and clear business details, in line with Google's helpful-content and E-E-A-T guidance.
  • Freshness where it matters. A visible updated date on pages about prices, rules or "best of" lists.

Notice what's not on the list: keyword stuffing, hidden text, invented statistics or pages written purely for machines. Content written for AI engines should read well for the person who clicks through, because that person is the customer.

How do you do answer engine optimisation, step by step?

Unblock the crawlers, find the questions, map each to a page, write answer-first, publish, and track the prompts. Here is the full process we use:

  1. 1

    Remove the technical blockers

Check that your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and that robots.txt, your CDN or your firewall isn't blocking the search crawlers used by AI engines. A page an engine can't reach can't be cited.

  2. 2

List the questions your buyers ask

Build a list of 20–50 real questions, in the words buyers use. Mine your Search Console queries for question-shaped searches, and add questions from sales calls, support tickets and reviews.

  3. 3

Map each question to one page

Decide which existing page should answer each question, or whether you need a new one. Where two of your pages compete for the same question, consolidate or differentiate them.

  4. 4

    Write answer-first

Use the question, or a descriptive version of it, as the heading. Answer it directly in the first one or two sentences, then add detail, examples, prices, steps and trade-offs. Close with an FAQ covering the follow-up questions.

  5. 5

Make every claim specific and checkable

Replace vague claims with concrete detail you can stand behind. Don't publish invented statistics. Add a real author, your business details and a last-updated date.

  6. 6

Publish, link and earn outside mentions

Publish the page, link to it from related pages, and make sure your business is described accurately on reputable third-party sites such as directories, review platforms and industry roundups.

  7. 7

    Track prompts and iterate

Check your priority prompts in an AI answer engine regularly. Where a competitor is cited instead of you, compare their page with yours, close the gap, and check again.

A practical note on step 2: the most reliable question list is one grounded in real demand. Your Search Console data already contains long, question-shaped queries people used to find you, including ones where you get impressions but few clicks because no page answers them well. Those are strong candidates for answer-first pages and for the prompts you track.

How do you measure AI search visibility?

Track a fixed set of buyer prompts in an AI answer engine and record whether you're cited, mentioned, or passed over for a competitor, then read that alongside your Search Console trends. No single number captures AI visibility, so use a few signals together:

  1. Prompt citation checks. For each priority prompt: was your site cited as a source? Was your brand named? Which other domains were cited? Repeat over time, because a single run is a snapshot and answers vary.
  2. Search Console impressions on your target clusters. Because Google's AI features draw on its index, rising impressions on the question clusters you're targeting are a useful supporting signal.
  3. Referral traffic from AI tools. Some AI tools pass referrer information when users click a source link, so check your analytics for visits from their domains. Not every click is attributed, so treat it as a floor, not a total.
  4. Business outcomes. Ask new leads how they found you. "ChatGPT recommended you" is worth recording even when analytics can't see it.

The FindContentGaps AI visibility report handles the first signal for you and sits next to your Search Console opportunities, so you can act on what it finds.

How does FindContentGaps run the AEO loop?

FindContentGaps finds the questions you're missing, turns them into briefs and QC-checked drafts, publishes them, and checks whether AI answers cite you. It's built by SEOPEAKS, a South African SEO agency, to run the process above as one workflow instead of five tools.

1

Find the questions

Connect Google Search Console (read-only). The AI mines your own click, impression and position data for content gaps, near-win pages, decaying pages, cannibalisation and topical clusters, with traffic forecasts to help you prioritise.

2

Brief

One click turns an opportunity into a brief: H2 structure, the real questions users ask as FAQs, semantic terms and entities, and internal-link suggestions.

3

QC-gated draft

A humanised draft in your brand's voice, following Google's helpful-content and E-E-A-T guidance with no invented statistics. The auto-QC gate scores it before you see it: direct answer near the top, question-style headings, FAQ block, substance, slug collisions, cannibalisation and banned brand words. Hard failures block the draft.

4

Human review and publish

You review and edit every draft. Approved content can be published to connected sites, including WordPress and some custom sites.

5

Track citations

Add the prompts your buyers ask, or let FindContentGaps suggest them from your content gaps. Each is put to a live, web-searching AI answer engine, which shows whether you were cited or mentioned and who was cited instead.

Then the loop repeats. A prompt where a competitor is cited becomes a new opportunity; the refreshed page gets checked again. Plans start at R699/month. See all features or pricing.

Which answer engines should you optimise for?

All of them share the same foundations, so start with the fundamentals above and then check each engine's specific blockers. Our engine-by-engine guides cover how each one finds sources and what to do first:

What can't answer engine optimisation do?

AEO can improve your chances of being cited, but it can't guarantee it, and anyone who promises otherwise is overselling.

What AEO can do

  • Remove the technical reasons engines can't use your pages
  • Make your pages the clearest, most specific answer available
  • Close content gaps so the question has a page at all
  • Show you which competitors are cited so you can learn from them

What it can't do

  • Guarantee that any engine cites or mentions you
  • Make results identical across runs, users or engines
  • Instantly change answers drawn from a model's training data
  • Replace indexing, site quality and genuine expertise

One more honest point about measurement: AI visibility checks are a sample. FindContentGaps currently runs checks on one live, web-searching AI answer engine. It's a useful, repeatable signal about whether your content is citable, but it isn't a report on every engine, and a citation in one engine doesn't guarantee a citation in another.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring and publishing content so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude can find it, understand it and cite it when people ask relevant questions.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

In practice, mostly yes. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) are both used to describe getting content cited in AI-generated answers. Some people use AEO more broadly to include featured snippets and voice assistants, but the day-to-day work is largely the same.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach your site, publish pages that directly answer the questions your buyers ask, keep your business details consistent across the web, and earn accurate mentions on reputable third-party sites. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but this gives you the best chance.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AI answer engines rely heavily on search indexes and crawled pages, so indexing, site quality and relevance still come first. AEO builds on SEO by shaping content so it answers questions clearly enough to be cited.

How long does answer engine optimisation take to work?

There's no fixed timeline. Technical fixes such as unblocking a crawler can matter quickly, while content improvements depend on when pages are recrawled and whether engines choose them for a prompt. Measure over months, not days, and track a consistent set of prompts.

Can you guarantee my business will be cited by AI engines?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. AI engines decide which sources to cite, and results vary between prompts, users and runs. FindContentGaps helps you find the right questions, publish citable answers and see what happens, but it cannot force an engine to cite you.
