What is AI visibility — and why check it?
AI visibility is whether AI answer engines cite or name your business when someone asks a question you should be the answer to. It's the answer-engine equivalent of rankings: instead of positions for keywords, you look at citations and mentions for the questions buyers actually ask.
It matters because some buyers now start their research by asking an AI assistant. If the answer recommends a competitor, you never see that lost enquiry in your analytics. A report makes the invisible gap visible — question by question.
What does the report show?
For every question and every engine, the report records what happened — then sums it up.
| In the report | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Cited | Your site is one of the sources the answer links to. The strongest result. |
| Used as a source | Your site was among the pages the engine consulted, but the answer didn't link to you. |
| Named | The answer mentions your business by name, whoever the source was. |
| Cited instead | The domains the engines relied on for your questions, ranked — general sites such as Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are left out. |
| Answer excerpts | What each engine actually said, so you can see how it framed the question and who it recommended. |
| Action plan | The priorities and the specific pages to create or improve, drafted from the results and reviewed by Ian. |
Which AI engines does it check?
Paid reports check ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude, each through its provider's API with live web search — online ordering opens as soon as all three are live. Each engine searches and chooses sources its own way, which is exactly why one engine isn't enough. API answers can also differ from what a person sees in the consumer apps, and answers shift with wording, time and location — so every report is dated, and we set the location to your market where the engine allows it. For how each engine finds sources, see our engine-by-engine guides.
What should you do when a competitor is cited instead?
Open the page that won, work out what it answers better than yours, and close that specific gap. “Cited instead” is the most useful line in the report:
- Find the page that won and read it as a buyer would.
- Compare the answers, not the design. Do they answer in the first paragraph? Give a price, a timeframe or a clear recommendation where you're vague?
- Check whether you have a page at all. Often the honest finding is that the question has no dedicated page on your site — a content gap.
- Look at the third-party sources. If directories or roundups are cited, make sure you're listed on them accurately.
- Publish, then check again once the page has been crawled.
What happens after the report?
You can act on the plan yourself, or let FindContentGaps run the loop. FindContentGaps connects to your Google Search Console, finds the content gaps and near-win pages in your own data, turns them into answer-first briefs and drafts checked by an auto-QC gate, and lets you re-check your AI visibility in the app as you publish. Read the full process in our answer engine optimisation guide, or see pricing (plans from R699/month).
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility report?
A dated check of whether AI answer engines cite or name your business when people ask the questions your buyers ask. Ours covers up to 25 buyer questions, shows who gets cited instead of you, and ends with a prioritised plan for what to publish — reviewed by a person before you receive it.
Which AI engines does the report check?
Paid reports cover ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude, each through its provider's API with live web search, and open as soon as all three engines are live. API answers can differ from the consumer apps, so each report is a dated snapshot.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
R2,500 once-off, paid securely through PayFast. The checks start once payment clears, and Ian reviews every report before it is released — usually within 2 working days. There is no subscription attached.
What do I need to give you?
Your business name, website, location and a line on what you sell. Add the questions your buyers ask and the competitors you worry about if you know them; if not, we draft the questions for you from what your business does.
What's the difference between being cited and being named?
Cited means your site is one of the sources the answer links to. Named means the answer mentions your business in its text. You can be named without being cited, for example when a directory or review site is the source that recommends you.
Can the report guarantee I'll get cited?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. The report shows where you stand and who is winning instead; the action plan sets out the pages and fixes that give you the best chance. Whether an engine cites you is always its decision.
Can I keep tracking after the report?
Yes. FindContentGaps subscribers can add their buyer questions and re-run AI visibility checks in the app as they publish (each check uses an analysis from their plan). In-app checks currently run on Claude with web search.
