What is an answer engine?

Answer engine: An answer engine is a search tool that responds to a question with a written answer rather than a list of links. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude with web search all work as answer engines.
Why does it matter?
A results page lets the searcher compare ten options; an answer engine usually does the comparing for them and presents a conclusion. If your business isn't part of the material it draws on, you may not be part of the decision at all.
Answer engines also change the shape of queries. People type full questions with context (budget, location, constraints) because they expect a tailored reply, so the content that serves them needs to be more specific than a page written around a two-word keyword.
How do you act on it?
- Keep classic SEO basics in place: indexable pages, sensible site structure and accurate business details. Most answer engines retrieve from web indexes.
- Write for the full question, including the qualifiers buyers add, rather than only the head keyword.
- Check that the crawlers each engine uses for search aren't blocked by robots.txt or your firewall.
