What is an AI citation?

Also known as: LLM citation, AI source link

AI citation: An AI citation is a link or named reference to a web page that an AI answer engine shows as a source for its answer. It is the AI-search equivalent of a ranking: the page was used, and the reader can click through to it.

Why does it matter?

When an assistant answers a question in full, the citation is often the only visible route from the answer to your website. A brand that is cited gets both the credibility of being named as a source and a chance at the visit.

Citations are also more observable than most AI behaviour. You can put the same question to an engine, see which domains it lists, and compare over time, which makes citations a practical signal for whether your content is being treated as a useful answer.

How do you act on it?

  1. List the questions your buyers ask assistants, in their own words, and check which sites are cited for each.
  2. Make sure every priority question has one page that answers it directly in the first sentence or two under a clear heading.
  3. Study the pages that are cited instead of yours and close the specific gap: a missing price, a vague answer, no comparison, an outdated date.
  4. Re-check the same questions periodically; a single check is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Where FindContentGaps helps

FindContentGaps' AI visibility checks put the questions you add to a live, web-searching AI answer engine (currently Claude with web search) and record whether your site appeared among the sources used, whether your brand was mentioned, which competitor domains were cited instead, and an excerpt. Checks are dated so you can re-run them and see movement.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI citation the same as a brand mention?

No. A citation links to a page as a source; a mention names your brand in the answer text. You can be mentioned without being cited (the engine knows your name from elsewhere) or cited without being named (your page supplied a fact). Both are worth tracking separately.

Do AI citations send traffic?

Sometimes. Some readers click the sources, many don't, because the answer already satisfies them. Treat citations as visibility and trust first and referral traffic second, and use analytics referral data as a floor rather than a full picture.

Can a citation disappear?

Yes. Engines can pick different sources for the same question from one run to the next, and as new pages are published. That's why repeated, dated checks on a stable list of questions are more useful than one screenshot.
