What is query fan-out?
Also known as: fan-out queries, query decomposition
Query fan-out: Query fan-out is when an AI search system breaks one question into several related sub-queries, searches for each, and combines the results into a single answer. Google has described using this technique in its AI search features.
Why does it matter?
With fan-out, the page that gets cited may be answering a sub-question you never targeted. A question about choosing a bond originator might fan out into searches about deposit sizes, interest rates and approval timelines, each with its own sources.
It rewards depth across a topic. A site that covers the related sub-questions clearly has more chances to be retrieved than a site with one broad page on the head term.
How do you act on it?
- For each priority question, write down the three to six sub-questions a thorough answer would need, and check that you answer each clearly somewhere.
- Use your Search Console queries to spot the long, specific variants people already search; they often mirror fan-out sub-queries.
- Link related pages so the cluster is easy to discover and understand as a whole.

Can I see the sub-queries an AI engine used?
Generally not directly. Some tools show the searches they ran, but most don't expose them. Mapping likely sub-questions yourself, from your own query data and customer conversations, is the practical workaround.
Does query fan-out mean I need lots of thin pages?
No. It means the sub-questions need clear answers, which can live in well-structured sections of a strong page or in a few related pages. Thin pages that repeat each other can cause cannibalisation instead.
