What is a content gap?

Also known as: content gap analysis, topic gap

Content gap: A content gap is a question, topic or search your audience cares about that your website doesn't answer well, or at all. Content gap analysis finds those missing or weak answers so you can create or improve the right pages.

Why does it matter?

Gaps are where demand exists but you have nothing good to offer. Filling a genuine gap is usually a better use of a writing budget than publishing another article on a topic you already cover.

In AI search, a gap is often the direct reason an engine cites someone else: when you have no page answering the question, you can't be the source.

How do you act on it?

  1. Start with your own data: queries you already get impressions for but have no dedicated page for are gaps with proven demand.
  2. Add questions from sales, support and reviews that don't appear in any existing page.
  3. Check whether each gap needs a new page or a new section on an existing page, to avoid competing with yourself.
  4. Prioritise by business value and effort, not only search volume.

Where FindContentGaps helps

Finding content gaps from first-party Search Console data is FindContentGaps' core job. It surfaces queries you're visible for without a strong matching page, then turns an opportunity into a brief with H2s, FAQs, entities and internal links in one click.

Frequently asked questions

Is a content gap the same as a keyword gap?

They overlap. A keyword gap usually compares the keywords competitors rank for against yours; a content gap is broader and includes questions and topics you don't answer well, whether or not a competitor ranks for them.

Do I need competitor data to find content gaps?

Not necessarily. Your own Search Console queries often reveal the most actionable gaps, because they show where searchers already associate your site with a topic you haven't properly covered.

Turn the theory into published answers

Find the questions you're missing in your own Search Console data, then brief, draft, QC, publish and check AI citations in one place.
